Frequently Asked Questions

An honor fraternity? Isn't this that dork frat?

Just because we're smart doesn't mean we don't know how to have a good time. In fact, the only thing 'honors' here are our academic requirements - a 3.0 to Rush with between 15 and 90 credits. We make our brothers leave the calculators and pocket protectors at home for our parties, and if you don't believe us, come check us out during Rush!

So what do you guys do?

Everything. We have a strong commitment to community service and scholarship, or academic enrichment, and those commitments drive most of our activities. Like many other Greek-letter organizations, we also participate in regular social events (like date parties and formals) to strengthen bonds amongst the Brothers.

What makes Phi Sigma Pi different from other fraternities on campus?

First of all, Phi Sigma Pi is co-ed. We began fully male, but in 1977 the guys got smart and let women in! (And yes, they are called "Brothers," too!) Second, Phi Sigma Pi is not just an honor society, nor is it just a social fraternity or sorority. We are a combination of honor society, service organization and social fraternity all mixed together. Third, instead of organizing events with on-campus Greek organizations, we travel to visit other chapters of our fraternity nationwide which creates a truly national brotherhood.

Is this one of those things where you just pay the money and put it on your resume?

Like we told you before, Phi Sigma Pi is more than just an honors society. It's not one of those organizations where you pay money and four years later graduate college with a line on your resume. There are minimum membership and initiation requirements to be fulfilled to remain a member of our organization. But, we have no doubt that once you become a brother, you will understand what it means to be a "brother for life" and will want to stay involved.

Will joining Phi Sigma Pi consume my life?

As is true with any organization, Phi Sigma Pi is what you make of it and the more you put in, the more you get back. With that being said, our brothers' levels of involvement vary greatly and that's ok. We have brothers who are only involved in Phi Sigma Pi and thus are very active and we have brothers who are leaders in many organizations on campus and just don't have time for Phi Sigma Pi to be at the top of the list and that's ok too! There are minimum participation requirements to remain a member, but Phi Sigma Pi will teach you leadership skills that will enable you to be highly involved and remain active elsewhere.

What if I already belong to a fraternity or sorority?

This must be your lucky day! Because Phi Sigma Pi is not at all incorporated into the Greek system, our brothers have the opportunity to join our fraternity as well as other social fraternities and sororities on campus. But, we don't recommend rushing both at the same time as our initiation program is just as intense as other organizations’.

Do you haze? What about alcohol and drinking?

Absolutely not. We strictly follow Cal’s and our national fraternity's policies on hazing, drinking and other risk management issues. Every brother and every initiate signs an agreement each semester to do so. At an event where alcohol may be present, those who are of the legal age can drink, but we have many brothers who choose not to, so the choice is really up to you.

Do I have to attend all night of Rush? What if I have class or work?

Your attendance at our Rush events is really up to you, although if you're going to miss something we highly suggest you email our Initiate Advisor to let us know that you're still interested. Rush is a time for you to meet the brothers and for the brothers to get to know you, and the more brothers you meet, the easier our decision is on who to let in. However, other obligations will not be held against you.

Any suggestions for Rushing?

Try to talk to as many brothers as you can. It is important that we remember you when it comes around to deciding who gets a bid. Have fun too!!!
