The Tripod: The Purpose of Phi Sigma Pi

Scholarship (Honor)

The acquisition and dissemination of information and knowledge through leadership.

To join the fraternity you must have a 3.0 GPA. But the honor does not end there. Members of Phi Sigma Pi are expected not only to succeed in their own academic endeavors but also to assist in the educational process for members of their organization and community. Education is not only a key component to the success of the brotherhood, but also that dictates the success of all society. Academic excellence is praised within the brotherhood and knowledge is openly shared for the betterment of all.

Scholarship translates into activities that enrich the minds of Brothers, such as scheduling speakers, conferences, seminars and workshops, creating a test bank to store old tests, study hours, and schedule visits to cultural places. They can also take part in writing scholarly papers, tutoring or developing local scholarships and awards.

Leadership (Service)

The application of professional skills and the fostering of leadership qualities by promoting and advancing the welfare of humanity.

Giving our time to the university, local schools and causes is part of what makes our organization special. The leadership strength of Phi Sigma Pi is found in its service to the community and the organization itself. Members use their knowledge and skill to lead by example. Service projects and events are a key part of Phi Sigma Pi's strength and motives. Phi Sigma Pi believes that by undertaking service projects, students can learn about the problems facing society and can better shape their views and leadership skills. We encourage our members to offer themselves as resources for charitable organizations. Our types of service projects vary greatly semester to semester. We try to serve the university and community by organizing a Meningitis Basketball Tournament with the Women’s Basketball team or assisting in the elderly facilities in the East Bay or raising money and donations for Teach for America or merely by cleaning up state parks in the East and North Bay.

Brothers of Phi Sigma Pi often volunteer time at Meals on Wheels and hospitals, sponsor and participate in AIDS walks, and take part in neighborhood clean-up efforts.

We believe that leadership is developed through serving others on campus and in the community and while in essence is found there, we also encourage leadership within the Chapter. The desire to be a leader is something that our fraternity can help foster. If you have wanted to be an integral part of running an organization on campus in even a small way, Phi Sigma Pi is a place for you to go. Whether you serve as an officer, a committee head or an active chapter member, you can become a leader and learn skills to help you in years to come.

Social

The fostering of non-discriminatory, fraternal fellowship within Phi Sigma Pi's ranks.

Scholarship and leadership are useless unless one has learned to work productively with others. Phi Sigma Pi promotes the concept of the well-rounded individual. Any activity that promotes fellowship teaches people about the intimacies and qualities of others. The knowledge gained through working closely with others toward common goals builds fellowship the third principle of Phi Sigma Pi. Though Phi Sigma Pi is not a social fraternity, Brothers engage in social events throughout the year to foster this source of its strength. Fellowship-building events can include such things as banquets, social and sporting events or trips. Without these social and recreational activities, a chapter would grow weak and eventually become inactive due to lack of commitment. Fellowship establishes commitment-and that's what brotherhood is all about! However, at the same time, chapters must be image-conscious, realizing that they do not exist merely for having good times.

Gathering together creates friendships that last beyond the college years. You can meet not only people from our own university, but from other schools nearby and ones from other states in the nation. Brothers of Phi Sigma Pi are held together by the lifelong bonds of fellowship. These bonds are the foundation upon which the brotherhood and all of its success is built.

National Organization

Nationally, our organization is amazing! We have 98 chapters spread out across our great country all united by the same ideals. Members of our fraternity become members of a nation-wide family. At national events, these members gather together as if they were attending a giant family reunion. Even though many are meeting each other for the first time, bonds are created that strengthen our national organization and make the distance in miles between our chapters seem almost minutes away. The Delta Omega Chapter has traveled to many of the other chapters from North Carolina to Texas to Pennsylvania. We have been skiing in the Rockies, went to the start chapters in Santa Cruz, saw Cow Chip Bingo (don’t judge until you’ve seen it!) and many Conventions all over the country.
